CPCWHS1001 – Prepare To Work Safely In The Construction Industry (VIC)

A construction worker must have completed general construction induction training (commonly known as the “White Card”) before being permitted to commence work on a construction site. This is a mandatory requirement across Australia.

If you have never worked in the construction industry before or you have lost your White Card; then this is the course for you.

This course will help introduce you to or serve as a reminder of the current health and safety legislative requirements, personal awareness, and the basic principles of risk management for working in the construction industry in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others.

It covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

Course Set – (RIIWHS202E & MSMWHS217) Confined Space and Gas Test Atmospheres

This course set is designed for new and experienced personnel required to work in confined spaces and carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace in the resources and infrastructure industries at an operational level. Many roles require confined space training, including safety, injury prevention and maintenance personnel, engineers, risk managers, mine managers, cable installers and transport personnel and safety observers/ stand-by personnel.

Participants will learn to distinguish what constitutes a confined space; key terminology; as well as understand the regulations and legislative requirements governing entering and working in and around confined spaces. Participants will identify hazards and emergencies as well as implement appropriate control measures; conduct risk assessments and apply for a confined space entry permit. Atmospheric testing is an important component of confined space work as these working environments may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.

Students will demonstrate how to enter, exit and work safely in a confined space according to an issued permit for two scenarios. Participants will also inspect and select appropriate personal protective gear; operate various confined space safety equipment including atmospheric testing/monitoring devices and interpret the results to take appropriate action; and conduct routine servicing of all equipment and gear.

  • physical ability;
  • ability to work in a restrictive space (for example claustrophobia) and ability to wear the PPE required to do the work (for example respirators).”

Course Set – (RIIWHS202E, MSMWHS201, MSMPER300, MSMWHS216 & MSMWHS217) Confined Space, Operate Breathing Apparatus, Gas Test Atmospheres, Issue Work Permits

This course set is designed for new and experienced personnel required to work in confined spaces; operate confined space safety equipment including atmospheric gas testing and breathing apparatus; conduct hazard analysis; and issue work permits in the resources and infrastructure industries at an operational level. Many roles require confined space training and this associated skillset including safety, injury prevention and maintenance personnel, engineers, risk managers, mine managers, cable installers and transport personnel and safety observers/ stand-by personnel.

This course set also applies to individuals who are working alone or as part of a team to conduct a hazard analysis which may be required under a safety case, by organisational procedures or simply as being good practice. It will provide individuals with the skills and knowledge required to conduct a hazard analysis.

Additionally, this course set applies to individuals who require understanding of the permit system and the limitations of each permit and making decisions regarding the need for and correct use of each permit. This unit includes the issue of any and all permits. Permits are also called ‘clearances’ by some organisations.

Finally, this course set is for those individuals who may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. These working environments may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. It covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work, interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

This course set has been designed for individuals who work alone or as part of a team as an operator required to wear breathing apparatus in their work role.  This might be because they are working in a confined space, with hazardous gases/vapours, or in an oxygen deficient atmosphere. It covers the skills and knowledge required to conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus, operate and maintain breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, and conclude operations as defined by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.

Course Set – (RIIWHS202E & MSMPER200) Confined Spaces and Work in Accordance with a Permit

This course set is designed for new and experienced personnel required to work in confined spaces and conduct work activities under the authority of an issued permit to work and within the context and requirements of that permit. This typically applies to all work undertaken by maintenance staff and contractors and also to any other non-process work performed on the plant. It aims to ensure that people working under a permit to work understand the system, know the limitations of the permit under which they are working and comply with all the requirements of the permit. Often people with this qualification may be called ‘permit recipients’ or ‘permit holders’ by some organisations. Some organisations call ‘permits’ ‘clearances’.

Course Set – (RIIWHS202E & MSMPER202) Confined Space and Observe Permit Work (Standby Person)

This course is designed for new and experienced personnel required to work in confined spaces and perform the stand-by person/ safety observer role in the resources and infrastructure industries at an operational level. Many roles require confined space training, including safety, injury prevention and maintenance personnel, engineers, risk managers, mine managers, cable installers and transport personnel.

The safety observer role is often referred to as a fire watcher, hole watcher or stand-by person. The primary role of a safety observer is to observe and interpret work permits, develop and be prepared to initiate a rescue/incident response plan, maintain communication with all the workers on the site, and ensure the work is being conducted in accordance with the permit conditions and workplace procedures. Safety observers can stop permit work, but do not have the authority to restart it. The scenarios specifically covered in this course include confined space and hot work. Please note, where the person is a safety observer for a confined space permit they should also be competent in confined space entry.

Participants will learn to distinguish what constitutes a confined space; key terminology; as well as understand the regulations and legislative requirements governing entering and working in and around confined spaces. Participants will identify hazards and emergencies as well as implement appropriate control measures; conduct risk assessments and apply for confined space entry permits and develop a rescue/ incident response plan.
